Our Wildeshausen municipality, located in the Wildeshausen nature park, encountered high operating costs with the wastewater pumps in the sewage pumping stations. We quickly identified the cause: wet wipes were leading to clogging, which was very costly to eliminate having to resolve it nearly every week. As the local wastewater manager, I found a practical solution to this problem by replacing our existing pumps with more efficient pumps.
I felt that using wastewater grinders is an unsuitable approach because we would have to filter them out again in the sewage treatment plant via a microplastic filter, for example. Instead, we solved the clogging issue by replacing the existing pumps in the pumping stations (these were dry-mounted centrifugal pumps, screw centrifugal pumps, but also submersible centrifugal pumps) with rotary lobe pumps. In my previous experience, I got to know and appreciate these powerful pumps and their low susceptibility to clogging. While other pump types tend to tangle wet wipes into long arm-thick raggings, the rotary lobe pumps easily convey hygiene articles as well as textiles. In 1997, I successfully converted the first pumping station to Vogelsang rotary lobe pumps. In the meantime, eight of the fifteen pumping stations were converted. Since then, clogging due to wet wipes and the like have become a rarity in these pumping stations. The plan for the conversion of the ninth pumping station is ongoing.
I always keep an eye on the operating costs and acknowledge that a single interruption can negate the energy savings of a highly efficient impeller. That is why I pay attention to a balanced relationship between electrical efficiency and operational safety. Another important argument for the rotary lobe pumps is the maintainability. After removing the cover, the pump chamber is freely accessible should maintenance work be necessary. Also, the wear parts such as the lobes, wear plates, the pump housing segments and even the seal can be quickly and easily replaced on-site by our employees without dismantling and disassembly.
