How the ReelUnit works

Hose reel systems for railway water supply and vacuum wastewater disposal If no conventional supply and disposal modules such as the Vogelsang TUnit or CabinetUnit can be used due to special structural conditions, the ReelUnit represents an ideal alternative. The ReelUnits are professional hose reel systems which are used both to empty toilet retention tanks using suction (ReelUnit WD) and to supply passenger trains with water (ReelUnit WS). Depending on the requirements, compact multi-row or particularly slim single-row hose reel systems are available.

If the supply or disposal stations cannot be mounted at working level, special underfloor service modules (ReelUnit U) are available. These can be supplied as a complete prefabricated part for direct underground installation or as units to be installed in a shaft.

Depending on local requirements, the ReelUnit U variant requires a manhole cover that can be walked on or driven over and through which the operator can pull the hoses out. Thanks to the specially balanced mechanism, little force is required to pull the hoses out. The strain on the operator is minimized and the hose material is protected.

Depending on the design, spring-preloaded hose reels or motor-driven hose reels are available. Equipment options, e.g. radio remote controls to operate the valve units or electric drives, mechanical opening aids for manhole covers further improve the ergonomics of the ReelUnit.

Options of the ReelUnit

Automation systems, such as preselection of filling volume and automatic switch-off on vacuum extraction stations, remote maintenance access, and automated operating data acquisition, allow economical use of resources and improvements in process efficiency.

The systems can be fitted with an optional data acquisition system: important operating parameters such as filling and rinsing cycles can be recorded, saved, and analyzed.

If there is a need to record process data or to automate water filling or wastewater disposal processes, the TUnit and CabinetUnit can be fitted with the required technical equipment such as flow monitoring and control elements.

The drip-free suction coupling EasyConnect Plus makes easy work of hygienic disposal of sanitary collection tanks, even in sensitive areas such as workshops. The patented valve design ensures drip-free vacuum extraction. The installation of additional components at the rail car is not required if using the Vogelsang EasyConnect Plus. The exceptionally compact dimensions of the EasyConnect, together with its low weight and integrated hose swivel joint, make working with the EasyConnect Plus highly ergonomic.

The optional radio remote control enables functions such as the operation of valves or the automatic winding of hoses at the press of a button.

If the water tank aboard vehicle has an external interface for filling level monitoring, our water filling systems can be equipped with automatic switch-off device. This is done using so-called “ICE” radio modules, which are inserted in the corresponding plug contact on the train and wirelessly transmit the filling level in the drinking water tank to the filling station.

The Vogelsang CabinetUnit, TUnit, ReelUnit, and RoadPump all have an automatic hose retraction system ensuring gentle and ergonomic hose handling.

The ReelUnit U is a supply and disposal module specially developed for use in narrow aisles between tracks. By installing the module in the ground, the intrusion of machinery equipment into the railway loading-gauge can be avoided. For maintenance and service, the ReelUnit components requiring maintenance can be lifted out of the housing so that they are easily accessible at the walkway level.

Stationary, above-ground hose reel systems for disposal (WD) or water filling (WS) are combined under the name ReelUnit S. Apart from spring hose reels, motor-driven hose reels are also available, which allow a reliable handling of extended hoses length. For outdoor installation, the ReelUnits can also be equipped with an insulated housing and heaters to prevent freezing.

If water supply and waste water disposal hoses have to be provided flexibly at different working positions, the ReelUnit M is the ideal solution. Hose reels mounted on a trolley or cart allow the units to be used wherever they are needed.

The stand-alone solution

Similar to the Vogelsang TUnit SP or the CabinetUnit SP, this variant is designed as a stand-alone solution with an integrated vacuum pump unit. With the ReelUnit SP, passenger trains toilet reservoir tanks can be emptied independently of a centralised vacuum system.
